APSA Local Chapters

APSA Local Chapter Initiative

Local Chapters (LCs) promote the mission of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) by increasing peer and institutional networking among physician-scientists in training. LCs create a central identity for students pursuing such training and serve as an effective vehicle to secure funding and pursue local, self-identified goals.

  • There are currently over 60 active Local Chapters across the country, we ensure these local chapter are able to communicate and share ideas
  • We oversee numerous APSA-sponsored awards that exclusive to US-based local chapters including $600 awards for speakers, events, and initiatives.

Why form a local chapter?

Because training as a physician scientist intersects various fields in medicine and science, LCs offer an effective means for students to supplement deficiencies in curricula as they see fit, while also giving emphasis to additional member-specified areas of interest. The formalized structure will allow LCs to more effectively achieve outlined strategies and goals. For these reasons, we encourage all interested in the physician-scientist path to establish or find a nearby LC, including undergraduates, medical students, and graduate medical trainees.

How do local chapters stay connected to national APSA?

LCs will communicate with APSA primarily through LC leadership and a designated Institutional Representative who will maintain contact with the APSA Membership Committee. Correspondence, typically will typically happen via email, GroupMe, or virtual meetings. This relationship is intended to facilitate efficient and effective LC establishment, and provide guidance throughout to ensure the LC’s goals are achieved.
