Each Spring, the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Karolinska Institutet and Cell Press co-organize the Days of Molecular Medicine Symposium (DMM). An important component of this event is the MD-PhD Program, this program provides full scholarships for up to 40 MD-PhDs to attend the meeting. This year's symposium is entitled "Systems Biology Approaches to Cancer and Metabolic Disease". The meeting agenda can be found here.
APSA & ASCI/AAP Travel Awards (50+ Awards up to $750 each)
The American Physician Scientists Association, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians will have a joint selection process for these travel awards (at least 26 awards will be given from the APSA and a similar number will be given from the ASCI/AAP). You must submit an abstract in order to be considered.
APSA Travel Awards (Sponsored by CSCR/MWAFMR) (5 Awards up to $500 each)

The MAWFMR will be making several travel awards available to APSA members who present at the CSCR/MWAFMR Poster Session in the amounts of $500 as part of the MWAFMR Scholar's Program. Awards will be based on the scoring of the submitted abstracts
The NIH MD/PhD Partnership Training Program is an alternative to traditional MD/PhD training. NIH combined-degree students obtain all or part of their Ph.D. research training in one of the more than one thousand biomedical research laboratories in the NIH intramural research program. Supplemental MSTP funding is available to students attending many combined degree programs. Undergraduates should apply simultaneously with applications to University MD/PhD programs, and first or second year medical students can also apply. The NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Ph.D. Program has been particularly popular among students pursuing M.D./Ph.D. training at NIH. This fully-funded accelerated doctoral program allows students to set up dual-mentored Ph.D. research projects involving laboratories at NIH and at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities in England. Other Ph.D. training programs are also available through the NIH Graduate Partnership Programs, and individual partnerships with a Ph.D. program at a students’ Medical School are also possible. You can sign up for the mailing list, contact mdphd@mail.nih.gov to receive more information, or apply. APSA member Cedar Fowler has joined the NIH MD/PhD partnership program as an NIH-Cambridge scholar and written an article for ACPOnline about the various programs available at the NIH for medical students.
You are cordially invited to the 6th Annual Meeting of the American Physician Scientists Association in Chicago, Illinois from Friday, April 23rd until Sunday, April 25th, 2010. For the development of molecularly-targeted treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia, converting a fatal cancer into a manageable chronic condition. The 2009 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award honors three scientists who developed novel treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) that converted this fatal cancer into a manageable chronic condition. By targeting the molecular underpinnings of this disease, Brian J. Druker (Oregon Health & Science University), Nicholas B. Lydon (formerly, Novartis), and Charles L. Sawyers (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) broke new ground in cancer therapy and radically altered the prognosis of CML patients.
Members of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Investigation have called for increased physician participation in the ongoing debate that has swept the nation in response to President Obama's mandate for health care reform. "Physicians have a unique appreciation of the tremendous successes and even greater potential of our health care system, yet we also endure first hand its woeful deficiencies. In the ongoing debate about how to improve the current health care structure in the United States, our individual voices have been all too quiet," laments the Journal's leadership in a September 10 editorial.
Recognizing the multifaceted nature of this debate as well as the integral role that physicians and scientists play in the development and delivery of medical care, the Journal invited academics, physician scientists, and key leaders to voice their opinions of what is needed to fix the American medical machine. These Personal Perspectives accompany the Editorial and are freely available online at www.jci.org/kiosk/physicians-voice.

Elias Zerhouni, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health, has been named Chief Scientific Adviser. www.ScienceTranslationalMedicine.org is being launched to help researchers more efficiently access and apply new findings from many different fields, explained Bruce Alberts, Science’s Editor-in-Chief. “We need to find novel and more effective ways to better understand and develop, for patients, the extraordinary advances we have made in the past few years. This is why translational medicine has to become a more rigorous and, in my view, a redefined new discipline of biomedical science, with a vibrant and focused community dedicated to basic and applied investigations of the highest scientific quality, and without artificial barriers between its constituent disciplines,” Dr. Zerhouni said. “We should never forget that the public supports our research not just for its own sake but for its promise to bring new and more effective approaches to health across the world. I am pleased by the decision of AAAS to launch this journal." Click here for more information.
