On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to the 1st Texas Physician Scientists Symposium to be hosted at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas on November 4, 2006. We look forward to hosting physician-scientist trainees from the entire Gulf Coast area.

Brief introduction from National Student Research Forum (NSRF) organizers regarding upcoming student research poster competition and deadlines.

Four programs will have a student talk briefly (10min) about his/her individual path within the program. The student's research will not be the major emphasis of his/her talk. Instead, his/her experiences thus far and "pearls of wisdom" will be shared.

Amir Mohsenin, UT-Houston (Just defended his PhD, and before returning to M3 year in 2007, he will be doing a post-doc in his lab this year)

Melanie Cree, UTMB-Galveston (In her last (7th) year of the combined program. Will touch on: choosing a mentor, some tips for getting your PhD done in 3 years, and tips for getting back into to clinics)

Jay Widmer, TAMU (In last year of PhD studying thermoregulation in bats. Actively involved with AMPAC (political arm of the AMA) in addition to organized medicine)

Geoff Preidis, BCM (A first-year PhD student. International student-humanitarian, working on AIDS in Haiti. Has received grants to help fund his initiatives there.)

Residency/Career Panel: A distinguished panel of MD/PhD graduates who have gone into various fields (academia, government, and industry) will talk about their paths and address questions from the audience. The post-MD/PhD panelists will include:

Breakout Sessions:
  • Pre-Med Breakout Session - panel of MD/PhD Program administrators. Each will speak 5min about their program, and then the panel will be open for Q&A.
  • M1/M2 Breakout Session - how to choose a mentor, prepare for the USMLE, succeeding in basic science courses, studying techniques, etc. A panel of early-phase graduate students will share advice with first- and second-year medical students. The panelists will include:

    3. Matt Rose (BCM G5)
  • PhD-phase Breakout Session - how to negotiate with your mentor on a time table, funding opportunities, tips on beginning to write your dissertation/papers, etc. A panel of post-PhD students will share advice with students in the PhD phase of their training. The panelists will include:
