On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to the 4th South Regional Meeting at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas on November 5, 2011. We are excited to host physician-scientist trainees from the Southern region and from the national APSA.

Objectives:

Vertical and Horizontal Networking and Mentoring amongst physician scientist trainees in the Southern Region
Training and Career Development

MD/PhD and DO/PhD students.
Medical students interested in research / academic pathways.
PhD students interested in medical school.
Undergraduate students interested in physician-scientist degree programs.

Early Online Registration ends October 28st, 2011 at 11:59 CST.

Late Online Registration ends on November 3rd, 2011 at 6:00 pm CST.

On-site Registration will be available on November 5th, 2011 dependent on space and funding availability.

Cancellations:

A full refund of the registration fee or meal ticket less an administrative fee will be granted for all written requests received at least 15 days prior to the APSA Regional Meeting. No refunds will be made for cancellations received after this date. The administration fee is as follows:

Telephone cancellations will not be accepted. Cancellations may be sent via email to smeeting@physicianscientists.org. The American Physician-Scientists Association reserves the right to cancel any program and assumes no responsibility for personal expenses. All refunds are processed within 30 days of written cancellation notice.

Applying to MD/PhD Programs

This will be a Q& A session specifically for undergraduate students on creating a successful application. Examples of questions that will be addressed include:

How much research do I need to apply to an MD/PhD program?

Should I apply to a certain MD/PhD program based on clinical training or research training?

Should I apply to both the MD only and MD/PhD programs at the same school or is it better to commit to the MD/PhD program only at the time of application?

Is MD/PhD a “back door” to getting accepted into medical school?

Choosing a Lab

  • Target audience is MD/PhD students who will be choosing a lab for the PhD portion of their training, as well as medical students at any stage of training who are interested in research as a significant aspect of their future career. Issues to be discussed include:
  • How do I know if a lab has funding?
  • Does the PI pay student’ s tuition?
  • What is the average length of time graduate students are in the lab prior to graduating?
  • What is the PI’ s attitude towards MD/PhD students?
  • Should I choose a lab based on my specific career interests?
  • What is the work environment/hours in the lab?
  • What does it mean for a PI to be a good mentor?

Choosing a Research-Friendly Residency Program

  • Why should I apply to a Physician-Scientist Training Program (combined residency/post-doc)?

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

  • This session addresses specific questions and issues regarding undergraduate research. It will provide interested undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn more about research opportunities for undergraduates.

    • Is it better to do biomedical research?
    • Should I join a new lab or an established lab?
    • What is a good time-frame for a project?
    • Should I focus on research in summer alone (SURF programs) or is it feasible todo research during the school year?

Realities of Translational Research

Are some specialties more conducive than others for conducting research and clinical activities simultaneously?

Social Sciences and Humanities

A roundtable discussion for students and faculty who are in the social sciences and medical humanities. Undergraduate, medical, and graduate students are encouraged to attend if they have interests in bioethics, history of science and medicine, epidemiology, anthropology, and other SSH fields.

Topics covered will include:

What does a PhD in the Social Sciences or Humanities cover?

What roles do SSH faculty play in academic medicine?

How do SSH students impact the field of medicine?

What is gained, and what, if anything, is missed by choosing the balancing act of research, clinics, and family?
