The 2015 APSA Midwest Regional Meeting will be held on Saturday, October 24th, 2015 at Saint Louis University (SLU) St. Louis, MO (3545 Vista Ave. St. Louis, MO 63104). For questions, please contact Nicole Clark at cnicole@slu.edu. Friday, October 23rd, before the conference, SLU APSA Local Chapter will host a social event at Crave Coffee House (3500 Caroline St., St. Louis, MO 63104), which will include free food and select alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages for a nominal charge.

Who Should Attend?

Everyone with an interest in becoming physician scientists! The organization and conference is tailored to MD/PhD, DO/PhDs, and MD or DO students interested in research pathways. Pre-medical undergraduate students and current PhD students with an interest in medical research are also welcome to attend.

Registration Information

Registration is open to all students at all institutions whether you have an APSA account or not. Please follow the direction on the registration page and fill in all required lines. If you wish to submit an abstract at a later date post registration BUT PRIOR TO THE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE please email Nicole Clark at cnicole@slu.edu.

Registration Costs

FREE FOR ALL REGISTRANTS. Saint Louis University is committed to having all interested students attend the conference without the extra burden of registration costs. Regardless of whether or not you are an APSA member, there will be no registration fees for this conference. 

Cancellation Policy

As a courtesy, please email us at cnicole@slu.edu at least 10 days prior to the conference if you have registered but decide not to come. This will help us better plan our conference and ensure that it remains free in the future.

Abstracts and Poster Session

The poster session at this APSA regional meeting will highlight the outstanding research and hard work of the students who attend. We encourage everyone attending the meeting to submit an abstract for the poster session.

Abstracts are limited to one per registrant and the registrant must be the first author on the abstract. Below are the abstract guidelines:

Abstract Word Length: 300 words maximum

Abstract File Name: lastname_firstname_2015_APSAMidwestRM

Abstract Formatting Instructions:

1.     Margins: 1.50” on all four sides

2.     Font: 12 point Times New Roman

3.     Justification: Justify all margins

4.     Abstract Title: Do not use ALLCAPS

5.     Presenting Author(s): Underline presenting author’s name

6.     Line Spacing: Insert single-line space between Title, Authors, and Affiliations, and the first line of the abstract. The rest of the abstract should be single spaced.

7.     Paragraph Indents: Indent the first line of the each paragraph of the abstract body 5 spaces (1/2”)


Please limit your abstracts to 300 words, and abstracts must include title, authors, and affiliations. The departments from SLU that are providing cash prizes for the poster contest include:

· Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

· Pathology

· Molecular Microbiology and Immunology

· Pharmacology and Physiology

· Clinical Research

· Social Science and Humanities

Each submitted abstract will be assigned to a category based on content for poster contest. The deadline for abstract submission will be September 28th  October 12th with no exceptions. Emails will be sent out to everyone who submitted an abstract informing them of whether or not their abstract was selected. Please email completed posters to SLU APSA by October 19th. No requirement to submit posters early; however, due to the high number of abstracts we have received, please try to keep your poster around 30'' X 40'' in size.

During the poster session, a panel of judges drawn from physicians and scientists at SLU will evaluate each poster and determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries.Each one of those students will be awarded a prize sponsored by the sponsoring SLU Departments up to $250.

Completed Poster must be Submitted: October 19th Requirement lifted

Directions to Conference

From the South: Take I-55N toward St. Louis and use the left lane to take exit 207B-207C for I-44W. Merge onto I-44W and drive for about 1 mile. Take exit 288 for Louisiana Ave toward Grand Blvd, turn left at the stop sign onto Lafayette Ave. Head west on Lafayette for a few blocks and turn right at the stoplight onto Grand Blvd. Head north on Grand Blvd for about half a mile. Turn right on Chouteau Ave heading east. After two blocks, turn right onto S Theresa Ave. Hickory East Parking Garage will be on your left.

From the West: Take I-70E toward St. Louis to exit 210A to merge onto I-64E/US-40E/US-61S toward Chesterfield (DO NOT USE THE OTHER EXIT TOWARD ST. LOUIS). Stay left to continue on I-64E for about 24 miles and take exit 37B for Grand Blvd. Turn left onto Grand Blvd heading south for about half a mile. Turn left onto Chouteau Ave heading east. After two blocks, turn right onto S Theresa Ave. Hickory East Parking Garage will be on your left.

From the Southwest: Take I-44E toward St. Louis to exit 288 toward Grand Blvd. Stay in the left two lanes and turn left onto Grand Blvd heading north. Head north on Grand Blvd for about half a mile. Turn right on Chouteau Ave heading east. After two blocks, turn right onto S Theresa Ave. Hickory East Parking Garage will be on your left.

From the North: Take I-55S toward St. Louis and continue on I-64W to exit 38A for Forest Park toward Grand Blvd, keep right. Turn left onto Grand Blvd heading south for about half a mile. Turn left onto Chouteau Ave heading east. After two blocks, turn right onto S Theresa Ave. Hickory East Parking Garage will be on your left.

From the East: Take either I-64W or I-70W (depending on your starting location) toward St. Louis. Keep right to continue on I-64W toward St. Louis to exit 38A for Forest Park toward Grand Blvd, keep right. Turn left onto Grand Blvd heading south for about half a mile. Turn left onto Chouteau Ave heading east. After two blocks, turn right onto S Theresa Ave. Hickory East Parking Garage will be on your left.

From Hickory East Parking Garage (walking): Exit Hickory East Parking Garage via the southwest exit. Turn left and head south, you should see a fountain. Continue walking straight until you see Crave Coffee House (location of the Friday night social event). Turn right, heading west. The Learning Resource Center will be the large building on your left. When you see another fountain, turn left and walk up the steps to the entrance. You have arrive.

***Note: There will be signs posted to guide you to the conference as well.


Lodging, Transportation, and Food

Suggested lodging is at theDrury Inn Hotel at Union Station. The address is201 South 20th Street St. Louis, MO 63103 and telephone is 314-231-3900 /800-325-0720. A special room rate of $99/single occupancy $109/ double occupancy is available if you ask for SLU APSA conference rate/Group number 2242911. (A total of 40 room reservations will be subsidized, first come, first served). Lambert Airport is the closest airport to SLU, taxi services are available to hotel/university. A Friday Night Social will take place at Crave Coffee House, with free food and ice tea/water. Drinks are available at a nominal charge. A free breakfast is included with your room reservation at Drury Inn Hotel. A light breakfast and lunch on the day of the meeting will be provided to all attendees in the LRC Hall.

A free shuttle will be available on Friday night, Saturday morning and Saturday after the conference to the hotel/event sights. Parking will be available in the Hickory East Parking garage.
