2006 APSA Texas Regional Meeting

APSA President Freddy T. Nguyen speaks to a volunteer at the registration table of the 2006 APSA Texas Regional Meeting

Standing Committees

APSA is led by five standing committees whose chairs are elected and are members of the executive council. Members of the standing committees consist of current medical and MD-PhD students. Appointments to the Standing Committees are made through the Chair and Vice-Chair of the individual committees in conjunction with the Executive Council. These committees are made up of APSA members and the appointments are made by the Executive Council. If you are interested in getting involved, click here to apply to be on a committee.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of APSA's Annual Meeting including arranging speakers, planning sessions, fundraising, and running the meeting. There are several objectives that guide the Annual Meeting Committee which include the exposure of future physician-scientists to the wide breadth of research fields, clinical specialties, and career paths one can pursue, the establishment of peer and top-down formal and informal mentoring opportunities provided through APSA and ASCI, as well as career development sessions to address training and career issues such as balancing life and work, balancing clinical responsibilities with research; and deciding to pursuit basic science, translational, or clinical research.

Finance

The Finance Committee is charged with maintaining the finances of the organization, and soliciting funds and donations to support APSA as an organization and its projects. The committee will also work closely with the Annual Meeting Committee to set and meet its financial obligations regarding APSA's Annual Meeting.

Membership

The mission of the APSA Membership Committee is two-fold. First, the committee will be responsible for the recruitment and long-term retention of members and Institutional Representatives into the organization. Second, the Membership Committee is focused on increasing the benefits that the APSA can offer the individual member. This involves advancing innovative ideas into workable projects, and collaborating with other committees to support the needs voiced by APSA members.

Policy

The Policy Committee leads APSA by making recommendations based upon feedback, collected surveys, and literature to the leadership and the board of directors as to the future directions of APSA. This committee is critical in ensuring that APSA addresses the current needs and issues of its membership. A second but equally important role this committee will play is making recommendations on behalf of APSA. They will work closely with other organizations with common interests by providing a voice to future physician-scientists.

Public Relations

The Public Relations Committee has several responsibilities including the maintenance of APSA's website, the publication of APSA's electronic newsletters, and the representation of APSA at other conferences / meetings, to the leadership of other organizations, and to the public. This committee works closely with the Student Doctor Network continuing to moderate and further the value of the co-hosted discussion forums about 1) Physician-scientist Training Programs (MD, MD-PhD, DO, DO-PhD) 2) Research Residencies and 3) Biomedical Research (MS/PhD).
