Core Purpose:

The American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is a national organization dedicated to addressing the needs of future physician scientists with respect to their training and career development.

Mission:

The APSA strives to be the student physician-scientists' leading voice for improving educational opportunities, advancing patient-oriented research, and advocating for the future of translational medicine.

Objectives:

Focusing on the needs of students and housestaff, including but not limited to MD/PhD trainees, APSA will pursue being:

  • The leading student organization for advancing opportunities for mentorship, community building, and mutual support of physician-scientists;
  • The principal source for obtaining and disseminating career development information for student physician-scientists regarding education, residency training, and beyond;

  • A dynamic organization that provides value to its members.

Executive Council

The Executive Council is made up of twelve positions elected by the Institutional Representatives during the APSA Annual Meeting in April of each year.  These positions are the only members of the Executive Council with voting privileges.

The committee vice-chairs are included as non-voting members of the Executive Council and are appointed to their positions by the Executive Council.  The vice-chairs may in the absence of the committee chair serve as the proxy vote.

Institutional Representatives

Institutional Representatives serve as the critical liaison between the students at the local institution and the APSA.  They are responsbile for helping us gain a better grasp of the issues and needs of the students at their respective institution.

Standing Committees

APSA is led by five standing committees whose chairs are elected and are members of the executive council.  Members of the standing committees consist of current medical and MD-PhD students.  Appointments to the Standing Committees are made through the Chair and Vice-Chair of the individual committees in conjunction with the Executive Council.
