Committee,
APSA is pleased to invite you to its 3rd Annual
meeting to be held in Chicago, IL on
April 13-15, 2007.The APSA Annual
Meeting is being held in conjunction
with the American Society for
Clinical Investigation, the Central
Society for Clinical Research, and
the Midwestern Section of the
American Federation for Medical
Research. On behalf of APSA, ASCI/AAP
and CSCR/MWAFMR, we are delighted to
bring you a stellar meeting filled
with phenomenal speakers, numerous
career development and mentorship
events, and several opportunities to
gain an invaluable perspective on
possible career paths available to
physician-scientists.
APSA members will have two opportunities to present their
scientific research at this combined
meeting. The first opportunity will
be the CSCR/MWAFMR Poster Session on
Friday, April 13, 2007.Abstracts
submitted for this poster session
will be published in the Journal of
Investigative Medicine. The second
opportunity will be at the ASCI
Poster Session on Saturday, April
14, 2007.At this poster session,
you will be able to present your
research to the ASCI and AAP members
who are amongst the leading
physician-scientists in the country
and span across all sectors ranging
from academia, to the NIH, and the
industry.
Provided below is the combined meeting schedule which lists
all of the events for which APSA
registrants are entitled to attend.
Each event on the agenda has been
labeled with the sponsoring
organization. There will be a
diverse group of
physician-scientists in attendance
ranging from well-established
clinical investigators to
K08-holding junior faculty members
and physician-scientists at all
levels of training. This combined
meeting will provide a unique
opportunity for MD-PhD students and
their MD counterparts to interact
with their peers as well as with
leading physician-scientists from
across the country and the world.
Several opportunities are available
for attendees to address career
development issues through informal
social sessions, panel discussions,
young investigator events, the
leadership workshop, and the Morning
Mentorship Breakfasts.
The APSA portion of the meeting along with the ASCI/AAP Joint
Meeting will be held at the Fairmont
Hotel. The Fairmont Hotel is
located on the northern edge of
downtown Chicago across from the
Millennium Park.The CSCR/MWAFMR
combined annual meeting, where APSA
registrants are also invited to
attend, will be held at the Hard
Rock Hotel (which is 2.5 blocks from
the Fairmont Hotel).
On behalf of the 2007 APSA Annual Meeting Planning Committee,
we have worked diligently to bring
you a meeting that is not only full
of stellar speakers but also gives
you the opportunity to be exposed to
the wide myriad of career
opportunities available to
physician-scientists. Speakers
represent every major field of
medicine, academia, NIH, and
industry. These renowned speakers
include Nobel Laureates, Albert Lasker Laureates, Wolf Prize
Recipients, National Medal of
Science Recipients, NIH Institute
Directors, Department Chairs, and
Howard Hughes Medical Investigators.

offers two Mentorship Breakfasts and
panel sessions addressing a range of
topics of special interest to
M.D./Ph.D. students. You'll be able

CSCR/MWAFMR Combined Annual Meeting Planning
Committee,
Dear Members of the
APSA,
The leadership of the Central
Society for Clinical Research (CSCR)
and the Midwestern Section American
Federation for Medical Research (MWAFMR)
invite you to attend the 2007
Combined Annual Meeting April 12-13,
2007 at the Hard Rock Hotel in
downtown Chicago.
In addition to the Trainee Travel
Awards, Outstanding Young
Investigator and Cardiovascular
Awards, CSCR is also offering 50
grants in the amount of $1,000 each
to K08, K12, K23 and K30 Awardees on
a first-come, first-served basis. All abstract submitters will also be
considered for the Oral Abstract
Session which will highlight the top
abstracts in the three categories. These presenters will also receive
an honorarium of $2,500 in addition
to any grants they are awarded. Additional details on how to apply
for a grant or award can be found at

Two plenary sessions, which cross
subspecialty lines, will be
moderated by Steven D. Shapiro, MD,
Chair of Medicine at the University
of Pittsburgh, and Kenneth S.
Polonsky, MD, Chair of Medicine at
Washington University. Each
Department Chair has invited three
outstanding research trainees and/or
junior faculty from their
institutions to present their
research.
The 2007 CSCR Hickam Lecture will be
presented by Edward J. Benz Jr., MD
on “Current Clinical Issues in
Primary Care.” Dr. Benz is
President of the Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute, the Richard and Susan
Smith Professor of Medicine, and
Professor of Pediatrics and
Pathology at Harvard Medical
School.Further, the MWAFMR Keynote
speaker at the 2007 meeting is Dr.
David Schwartz, Director of NIEHS
and the National Toxicology Program.

There will be two
opportunities for APSA
members to scientifically
contribute to this joint
meeting. Please note
the different abstract
deadlines for each poster
session. APSA members
are eligible to present at
both poster sessions.
The first will
be the Poster Session hosted
by the CSCR/MWAFMR Combined
Annual Meeting. Abstracts for the posters
presented in this session
will also published in the
American Federation for
Medical Research's Journal,
the Journal of Investigative
Medicine and will be indexed
in PubMed.
The second
will be the Poster Session
hosted by the ASCI/AAP
Joint Meeting. Posters
presented at this session
will give APSA members the
opportunity to present their
research to the top leading
physician-scientists from
across the nation. |

Funding Opportunities:
Travel Awards |
The MAWFMR
will be making several
travel awards available to
APSA members who present at
the CSCR/MWAFMR Poster
Session in the amounts of
$200 for trainees from the
City of Chicago and
surrounding area and $500
for those outside the
surrounding area and the
state of Illinois.
Awards will be based on the
scoring of the submitted
abstracts.
The ASCI will be awarding
three poster awards in the
amounts of $1000.00 at the
conclusion of the meeting
and will be announced on
Sunday, April 15, 2007. |
